The painting represents the early resurrection biblical story of Christ on the Road to Emmaus, when the disciple Cleopas (the brother of Saint Joseph) and one other unnamed disciple meets Jesus. This occurs on the day of the resurrection, the disciples had heard that Christ's tomb was found empty, when they encounter a stranger on
