Native only to Texas prairies and savannahs, the compact evergreen rosettes are easy to miss, but the same can't be said for the flowering spikes of scarlet orange, which tower over the native grasses. The flowers are favorites of both bees and hummingbirds. Penstemon havardii is tolerant of both clay and sandy soils, as
