Handmade Ceramic Swiss Cheese Wedge lederhosen I have a hard time

I have a hard time wrapping my head around how one would carve a few links from one piece of wood

dated between 1800-1813

(I believe there was likely once a separate winding device that attached to wind it up and properly get it spinning

especially when they are beautiful as these

which I'd guess dates to the 1860s-1880s

It appears to be be signed CC, or maybe they're just decorative flourishes, on one side. 3 7 8" x 3 1 2" x 2" and in great condition.
