Heygate was Alderman for Coleman St Ward from 1812-1843 and Lord Mayor in 1822-1823
This was at one time in the doorway of the house built on the site of the Boar's Head Tavern
and London in the distance
a device which allowed the wick to burn to the very bottom without waste

The woman on the left is wearing an off the shoulder dress with a very full skirt that was achieved by wearing lots of petticoats, and a crinoline. The fullness of the skirt is also accentuated by the extremely tight bodice of the dress. The woman on the right is wearing a cloak over her dress which is decorated with lace, ribbon and bows.
