This beautiful sculptural curiosity is a Japanese wood and papier mache fragment--half of a rib cage--from what I presume was a full body model of a human skeleton

Each one was hand drawn in pencil and colored pencil or crayon on scraps of stiff paper (it seems maybe some old trade cards)

Larger measures 4 7/8" long x 2 1/4" tall x 1 1 /8" wide

16 1/2" t x 7" w x 1 3/16" thick and in good condition

The curious drawing itself, ink and graphite, appears to have been done on paper that was folded into a letter and though I haven't removed it from the frame I'd be willing to bet it matches that of the two love letters tucked into a pocket on the back of the frame.
