C. 1870s, clearly well used, with all of its original components (less the paints and pots and brushes that would have been acquired to fill it.) The lid of the rear section pulls up to reveal grooves for tubes of paint or charcoals pastels, and the front section's top tray (meant for holding brushes) lifts
