He was one of the group of drivers known as the Bentley Boys who drove for Bentley Motors. He won the Le Mans 24 Hours twice in 1929 and 1931. In 1931 he bought a Maserati for Grand Prix events and an Alfa Romeo for sports car racing. He won the Irish Grand Prix in the Alfa.
